Meet the Designer: Lorraine Dixon

Lorraine Dixon is the founder of Open Narrative, a brand that puts reflective thinking at the forefront of its products.

From journals to card games, Open Narrative was founded with the purpose of encouraging people to create meaningful conversations, whether that be with others or within your own thoughts.

We talked to Lorraine about what her design process is like and where she gets inspiration from.

Tell us a little about yourself and your brand.

My name is Lorraine Dixon, I’m based in Sheffield and journaling is my passion. I journal every day but it’s a brain dump style of free writing that most of the time I don’t read back, so in 2017 I created Open Narrative with my first publication, Being Me, a five-year coaching diary.

I wanted to record my life and tell my story through daily snapshots with enough information to be able to reflect on previous years’ thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I wanted to see how I was growing as a person and where change was happening without me really being aware of it. We all notice the big shifts but it’s the small changes that we don’t really notice or pay attention to that can make a big difference to who we are, what we do and how we feel.

What inspired you to create Open Narrative?

Open Narrative is about having courage to be part of real conversations, creating dialogue, looking a little deeper, either within yourself or with others. This is reflected in the purpose of the products we create.

Being Me is a five-year diary which provides a space to record and reflect through simple but evocative daily questions over time. Reflections is a card game which promotes meaningful conversations through Q&A or the offer of kindness. My Journal provides space for writing and a range of creative mediums. All Open Narrative products reflect my values and the colours that make me happy. I use local designers and creatives and all the products are printed in the UK on FSC Certified paper and recycled card.

Can you tell us three interesting facts about the brand?

  1. Open Narrative is a small independent publisher based in Sheffield, England
  2. The design and development of our products is done so by independent local talent and creatives
  3. Our products are created to help people be joyful beings who walk lightly on the planet, therefore we use the most sustainable and environmentally friendly resources available so that we can keep our carbon footprint to a minimum

Where do you look for product inspiration?

I find ideas in the people I meet and the networking groups I attend. My brain never seems to stop and there are lots of ideas flying around but for an idea to have legs I need to be able to feel the idea grow and identify what it will give the person using it. If it’s going to work it has to have a real purpose.

What is your design process like?

The content is the first part of the process. Any new product must have a clear purpose. Who would use it, what would they use it for, why would they use it, where would they use it and when would they use it?

I use local creative talent to ensure that the product is something anyone would be happy to own. I need to create something that makes me happy and is something I believe in. It must be something that has a real purpose and looks great.

What has been your biggest highlight thus far?

This probably sounds a little twee, but each time an order comes in for one of my products I feel a sense of real satisfaction. I am the person in front of and behind the scenes. I ensure that each book or game is wrapped and labelled before sending it out. I suppose the biggest single achievement was when Being Me Diary was chosen by Scarlet Opus for the 2020 Stationery Show trend stand. The show couldn’t go ahead due to Covid-19, but the recognition of my brand meant a lot to me.

What’s next for your brand?

I recently took over Art Scene, an art supplies shop based on the outskirts of Sheffield City Centre. We have just completed the refurbishment and added an Italian coffee shop so once Covid restrictions are lifted and the shop is open I am planning some journaling workshops and adding a range of stationery to the art supplies section. I am also working on a new personal development diary for publishing in 2022.
