Meet the Designer: Joppe Coelingh Bennink

Tell me about yourself and your brand – who are you and what sets you apart?

Yop & Tom was founded on the idea that we can help people disconnect from digital, rediscover their creativity, and live their true potential. We’re on a mission to create the best possible planners and journals in the world. (And the most beautiful ones too)

What inspired you to create your brand?

Back in 2019, something was off with me. I couldn’t focus. I stared at a screen most of the day, but found it hard to get anything done. The hours were filled with distractions and seemed to lack purpose and creativity. Endless notifications, work emails, family life, etc. I think we’ve all felt like this at times, right?

And then my friend Tom introduced me to journaling. When I used pen and paper, I really calmed down. I found my “inner peace”, simply by jotting down some thoughts, writing down some goals and tasks or by drawing something instead. And it struck me: Distraction and overwhelm are a major issue in society. They can even cause mental health issues and affect people’s feelings of fulfillment. So let’s help people get back on track. Tom agreed, and this is how it all began.

Can you tell us three interesting facts about the brand?

  1. We’re currently on our 7th generation of our dot grid journals in just 12 months. We keep iterating and improving them based on our community’s feedback on our journey to create the best journals in the world.
  2. Every month we highlight our Creator of the Month to showcase some of our amazing customers and the creative artwork they tag us in on social media. www.yopandtom.com/pages/creatorofthemonth
  3. We used our undated goal planner, called the Power of 3 to plan and launch our new website. We can say from experience that the science based system really works

Where do you look for product inspiration?

We take inspiration from concepts and ideas that represent achievement or nature. Some of our emblems represent the idea of reaching for the stars for example, or having your head in the clouds. The hummingbird, on our upcoming journal, looks like it is floating in mid-air, but is moving so fast to achieve it. And the hot-air balloon achieves its goals guided by nothing other than the wind. And the colours are super important to us too, again inspired by nature.

What’s your design process like?

Tom and I had no prior experience in design before we started this venture, so to figure this out from scratch, we had to depend on recruiting some very talented individuals. And we’re very lucky to be working with them still. Our product requirements are also very specific, and there aren’t many manufacturing partners in the world who can produce these journals to the high quality standards that we set. Some of the typical Yop & Tom features we are proud to include in this process are the extra thick paper, sewn (lay-flat) binding, rounded corners and gold-debossed emblems and we only work with vegan leather and sustainable paper.

We always start with a central concept and work with our designers to bring that to life. Inspirational colours, emblems and attention to detail on the internal design are critical to our success. Of course we also build in any feedback we’ve received from our community to make sure we are constantly improving and making the best planners and journals in the world.

What’s been your biggest highlight thus far?

We were asked by Arianna Huffington and Marina Khidekel to help promote their latest book “Your Time To Thrive” to be used in conjunction with our Power of 3 goal planners. We love Arianna Huffington and her organization Thrive and we were super excited to be working with them. We hope to engage in some further partnerships with them down the road.

The other major highlight is to see some of the comments from people on our social media pages and product reviews. People absolutely love our products, and that is nice to know when you put your heart and soul into something. It’s amazing to see what kind of artwork people create in our journals as well. It makes me happy that we can make a difference to someone else’s life.

What’s next for your brand?

We’re very ambitious and we are growing super fast. We will keep launching new products and adding new variations in the next year. We have recently opened up our website in the USA and also sell in Canada now. That’s a huge market for us, and we need to focus on our expansion there for the rest of the year. Asia and the rest of Europe will be next on our list after that
