Meet the Designer: Cierra Block

Cierra Block is the designer and creator of London Block by Block, beautiful illustrations turned into helpful maps.

From cards and prints to tote bags and gift wrap, Cierra’s maps are both functional and artistic.

We talked to Cierra about what her design process is like and where she gets inspiration from.

Tell us a little about yourself and your brand.

I’m Cierra! I love to inspire people to go on adventures and discover new places in London, whether they have lived here all their life, or are just visiting for the weekend. I create illustrations that work as both guides and art. The combination of utility and design produces a beautiful map that allows people to create memorable experiences. Maps help us make sense of the world around us, and all the better if it leads to a hidden corner of London or a delicious bakery.

What inspired you to create London Block by Block?

I created London Block by Block as a way of organising my favourite things about London and beyond. I wanted to create guides that were fun to look at but also provide helpful information. Every map I create starts with an idea. It might be where are the best pancakes in London? What are the must-visit places in Marylebone? What are the best bookstores in London? From there I research and curate a list to create a useful and beautiful illustrated map.

Can you tell us three interesting facts about the brand?

  1. It started as a mat leave project and grew from there. In fact, I didn’t go back to my former job.
  2. My last name is Block. I love a good word play and Block by Block felt like the perfect name for my business.
  3. Despite the name, I illustrate maps of lots of different places.

Where do you look for product inspiration?

I get inspiration for my illustrations from daily life in London but also from books, long walks around London, and weekends away. I like to create illustrations from what I know, so that encourages me to always be exploring.

What is your design process like?

I do a lot of research before I create a map. For me it is equally important to curate the map as illustrate it. I want to create something that will be highly useful, but also beautiful. Once I have researched what to include in the map I start illustrating.

What has been your biggest highlight thus far?

I absolutely love collaborating and have done so with some of my favourite bakeries in London. Any time a dream client reaches out to me out of the blue I do a little happy dance.

What’s next for your brand?

I am ever expanding my range of products and have some really fun ideas for this year.

Where can people purchase a London Block by Block illustration?

Right now, you can buy through my website www.londonblockbyblock.com.

You can meet Cierra at London Stationery Show where she will be exhibiting with London Block by Block from 5-6 October 2021.
