A few words from Valentina Tikhonova

Artist/Illustrator

"I have moved and travelled around a lot, which had a significant impact on my life. My art and illustrations reflect these travels and moves; meeting people, visiting new places/countries, loving coffee, and the feelings these things evoked. I love doing first-hand research and taking pictures. Over the years I have developed my signature style and produced a body of work that reflects my life experiences.

Over time, I have tried many different mediums such as coloured pencils, watercolour, gouache, acryl, graffiti spray and ink. I found my passion in ink art because there is so much room for free hand work.

The goal of my illustrations is to help people to understand that any experience in our lives can be beneficial and that there are a lot of techniques to help us reduce anxiety and develop a healthy wellbeing.

My collection, “Grid”, started many years ago and mostly utilises pen. Typically, a grid visually represents restriction, but for me it represents freedom; freedom from my worries and a release from my own restrictions that I express through my process of creation. Colours are added to create layers that represent my emotions during the process/drawing/release of restriction.I found that drawing grids helped put me in a state of calm. I noticed that, when I sketched the lines, I felt free from my inner thoughts and worries. So now, I always keep a small sketchbook and a pen or pencil in my bag.

My other grid-based collection is “Fantasy/Surreal”, which combines acrylic and ink drawings into a colourful grid. The result is always amazing, no matter how I create it or what I use for drawing lines, it can even be as simple as a stick or piece of paper/cardboard.

The collection “Mood” was started during the first lockdown, and reflects what I felt every day for 30 days. I have not stopped drawing since.

Now I use ink and work in Adobe Ai to develop a poster collection. I cannot wait to show you at London Stationery Show this October! Come visit me on stand no. G108."
